Daniel P. Malone, founder of the Generation of Promise, was honored by the State Bar of Michigan at its 2006 Annual Meeting. Malone, Director of the Global Automotive Practice Group at Butzel Long in Detroit, was one of five recipients of the Champion of Justice Awards given by the State Bar of Michigan. Champion of Justice Awards are given to practicing lawyers and judges each year by the State Bar of Michigan. Awardees are selected based on their integrity and adherence to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession; superior professional competence; and an extraordinary professional accomplishment that benefits the nation, the state, or the local community in which the lawyer or judge lives.
“The Board of Trustees of the Generation of Promise, along with all of the present and past students involved in the Generation of Promise program, is extremely proud of Dan. His relentless pursuit of racial harmony in metropolitan Detroit serves as an inspirational example to all of us,” said Thomas Costello, Jr., President, Board of Trustees.

This year, the Generation of Promise worked diligently with Dr. Douglas Barnett and PhD candidate Meliksah Demir of Wayne State University's Department of Psychology to expand our evaluation efforts and provide additional feedback on the program's impact. Results from this year's evaluation indicate the program is achieving great success in educating the majority of students about different ethnic groups, motivating student participation in community service, and encouraging personal growth in understanding and embracing peers of diverse backgrounds.
For instance, the evaluation revealed that over 75% of student participants experienced significant self-growth and greater awareness about ethnic diversity in metropolitan Detroit. Moreover, an even higher percentage reported having developed strong friendships with peers in the program from diverse backgrounds. This is a particularly significant achievement given that even within ethnically diverse schools, youth rarely develop close relationships across cultural lines. The friendships formed by participants confirm their personal commitment to understanding and embracing cultural differences and bode well for their ability to bridge ethnic divides in their future.
Program participants rated the program's efforts to educate students about racial and ethnic diversity with an almost perfect score, averaging a rating of 6.1 on a scale from 1 to 7, indicating that on average the program did "an excellent job" in these curriculum areas. Their responses also confirmed the program's success in selecting and training program facilitators in that over 80% of students reported having formed positive relationships with program facilitators.
These statistics support and expand upon the anecdotal evidence witnessed by all program facilitators during the program year. Students continually report that their involvement in the Generation of Promise stimulated growth in cultural sensitivity, commitment to community betterment and helped solidify their own self-identity in the process.
As students complete the program and continue their high school journey, the Generation of Promise is confident that experiences in the program shape skills and sensitivities that will guide participants’ leadership choices and future success.
